We are excited to launch our New Loveland Coffee Blog, as we love to engage and educate our fellow coffee lovers! Chris Rawlings, a barista at Loveland Coffee, was recently interviewed by Elisheva Hinkle, a local blogger of Teen Musing, and she asked him a few questions about his newest drink. Elisheva will be our guest Blogger and we are happy to have her on board!
Every month or so Chris starts working on a new drink for the Loveland customers. With this drink, I was lucky enough to get a behind-the-scenes look at how it was made. Chris even let me grind beans, insert the portafilter, and swirl the milk! I got to keep the drink I helped make and I'll tell you right now, it is wonderful. He's not exaggerating when he says it tastes like a cinnamon roll!
What is this month's drink?
This month's drink is the Cinnful Dolce! It is rich and creamy with just the right touch of cinnamon. It's like curling up on the couch with a Cinnabon® cinnamon roll!
What is in the Cinnful Dolce?
The Cinnful uses our hand-scraped vanilla sugar, a touch of toffee nut syrup for a buttery undertone, and pungent Ceylon cinnamon. The effect is quite amazing!
How did you create the Cinnful Dolce?
I remember waking up one morning in December and craving a hot cinnamon roll, not just any cinnamon roll but a real Cinnabon® cinnamon roll with it's warm bready goodness! When I got to work that morning I started deconstructing the different flavors that hit the pallet and in what order and then began experimenting. I knew that the base needed to be the vanilla sugar with its smooth mild sweetness. From there I needed a butter flavor to represent the sweet dough used in making cinnamon rolls. After trying a couple of different syrups I settled on the toffee nut. It only takes a touch of it otherwise it can be overpowering. The last part was simple... cinnamon!
Where do you find inspiration when coming up with a new drink?
I find inspiration all around me really. Last spring the blooms on the trees that line St. Andrews Road in Irmo inspired me to seek out something completely different, and to my knowledge never used in a coffee drink before. Orange blossom nectar. This citrusy-floral component added amazing depth to some new coffee drinks. Recently I was in Charlotte at the Savory Spice Shop and found smoked sugar. After tasting it I was inspired to create the Christmas drinks we featured just this past season. Looking forward to this spring I am feeling the pull towards simple connoisseur style drinks. I want to challenge the palate and get people to think outside the box a little. The Flat Black is one such drink that I created on that level. It is basically bittersweet chocolate ganache melted in the bottom of the cup with a shot of espresso and topped with just the right amount of half & half making it a breva style drink. The richness of the chocolate with that of the half & half really pull the sweetness from the espresso. The effect is like drinking a chocolate lava cake. It's stunning! Aside from that I have been inspired to begin creating custom blends of roasted coffee. I really want to challenge people to get away from the sugary-sweet Starbucks style drinks and instead towards training their pallet to enjoy the distinct subtleties of a good cup of coffee. Black. Nothing else needed. One such blend is our Luminosity blend with top notes of understated caramel which rise to a beautiful vibrant floral crescendo with a soft lingering but distinct citrus finish. Like I said... you should need nothing else because good coffee is just that. When you add all of this other stuff to it it becomes something else entirely. The key to life is always challenging yourself. Sometimes you land on something phenomenal and sometimes you throw that thing in the trash and start over again so don't be afraid to try new things and fail because even failure is moving forward!
So for all you cinnamon roll lovers- the Cinnful Dolce is the drink for you! Come by the kiosk to say hello and try this amazing drink.
